Description
Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The cathedral was designed and built between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It is shaped like a Latin cross with a transept, dome and bell tower. The dome is supported by columns on a hexagonal base. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. A series of semicircular arches separate the nave from the two aisles. The exterior and interior are both made of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes.
This exterior view shows the beautiful architectural details and amazing workmanship in this gorgeous cathedral.
