Description
La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain has been under construction since 1882 when architect Francisco de Paula del Villar began its initial construction. When Villar resigned in 1883, Antoni Gaudi took over as chief architect, incorporating Gothic and Art Nouveau designs. The rest of his life was devoted to this project and he is buried in the crypt. When he died in 1926, the church was less than one quarter completed.
The funding of the construction of this magnificent church relies entirely on private donations, and has encountered numerous interruptions including the Spanish Civil War. Technological advancements have hastened the progress in the last 30 or so years, and the construction is scheduled to be completed in 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death. This may have been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This image is looking toward the front of the church showing steps leading up to the altar, the cross, gorgeous stained glass windows, and the magnificent lighting and pillars. In 2022 it looks to me to be complete inside, though there is still scaffolding and building cranes outside.
